In what officials are calling the most destructive flooding event to hit New York in over a decade, torrential rainfalls overnight have submerged large parts of the city, crippling infrastructure, overwhelming emergency services, and sparking widespread evacuations. But amid the rising chaos, one extraordinary story is shining through the darkness — the rescue of a young girl by a heroic police dog named Key.

Beginning around 11:45 p.m. on Wednesday night, record-breaking rainfall — nearly 6 inches in just three hours — pummeled the five boroughs. Flash flood warnings lit up phone screens, and by 1:30 a.m., multiple subway lines had been halted as water poured into tunnels and underground stations.

The city’s emergency hotline received more than 8,000 calls between midnight and dawn — but one stood out. At 2:17 a.m., a chilling partial 911 transmission was recorded from a cell phone near Canal Street:

“I’m stuck… underground… it’s rising… I can’t…”

Then, silence.
